bonnie tyler

Bonnie Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkinson on June 8, 1951 in Skewen, Wales, starting a singer career in 1975, but she performed alongside the R&B homeland band, Mumbles, since early 1971.

Bonnie's debut album, "The World Starts Tonight", was released in 1977 after a preceding single entitled "Lost in France". Achieving modest success, Bonnie Tyler embarked on a European tour while another single track, “More Than A Lover", peaked number 30 on UK's Top-30 chart.

Later in 1977, Bonnie Tyler had to undergo surgery for the removal of nodules found on her vocal cords. Eventually, that surgery would shape her peculiar raspy voice that helped breakthrough into the mainstream with the release of her next single a cover of "It's a Heartache", a cut taken from her album "Natural Force".

The song "It's a Heartache", was also recorded by American singer Juice Newton. There was a controversy because both versions went on airplay with just a week’s difference, which was an advantage for Newton hitting the number one single in Mexico, but number 86 on the Billboard's Pop Chart, in which Bonnie’s version hit number 3.

Bonnie Tyler's version of this song became a pop classic that topped the charts in the UK, Germany, France, and Australia, making the U.S. market renamed her second album from "Nature Force" to "It's a Heartache".

Between 1975 and 1981, Bonnie Tyler recorded four albums for RCA Records, but her return to worldwide popularity came after signing with CBS Records. In 1983, "Faster Than the Speed of Night" was released with the support of a video-single "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

The increasing popularity of MTV took "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to hit number one in no less than 18 countries, making Bonnie Tyler a Guinness Record holder as the first ever British female artist having an album in the UK charts number one for four weeks.

Although, this was the only album every receiving this type of popularity, she has remained active recording new albums. In 2007, CBS Records released "From The Heart", a new Bonnie Tyler Greatest Hits collection album.
