Charlie Daniels was born Charles Edward Daniels on October 28, 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina, and began his musical career during his teen years in the 1950’s playing fiddle and guitar with local bands in his hometown, at the same time that he began to write his own songs.
Charlie became professional at age 21 and formed his first band, The Jaguars, in 1959. The band released an instrumental rock and roll album produced by Bob Johnson that did not succeeded, but kept Charlie Daniels writing and playing for the next year.
In the late 1960’s, Bob Johnson advised Daniels it would be better to dismember The Jaguars and move to Nashville Tennessee to become a session musician. Charlie Daniels did so and Elvis Presley recorded one of his songs ("It Hurts Me") in 1963.
Turned into the most popular fiddler in Nashville, Charlie Daniels played on several Bob Dylan albums, he was also part of Johnny Cash, and Leonard Cohen's touring band in the late 1960’s and played in Ringo Starr's first solo album.
Charlie Daniels solo self-titled debut album was released in 1971, followed by "Honey in the Rock" that produced a hit song, "Uneasy Rider" that peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In the following years, Charlie Daniels formed the Charlie Daniels Band and organized a series of Volunteer Jam concerts around or based in Nashville, which have continued until the present. Daniels breakthrough into the mainstreams came after his album "Million Mile Reflections" from which the song "The Devil went down to Georgia" hit numerous top-ten charts around the world.
After that song, Charlie Daniels won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1979. The following decades produced more albums and more hits on the Country music charts, although Daniels has also released Christian and Gospel recordings after he stated that he was a born again Christian.
From 1971 to 2007, Charlie Daniels' discography includes 51 albums, from which two of them were released in 2007, "Live from Iraq" and "Deuces". During this year, the re-recording cover of "The Devil went down to Georgia" is expected to be included in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
