Goo Goo Dolls (or GGD) is one of the veteran bands in the alternative rock scene although rooted in the most pure punk influence. The band was formed by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac in 1986 in Buffalo, New York but eventually moved to Los Angeles, California.
Goo Goo Dolls' original lineup consisted of John Rzeznik (vocals & guitar), Robby Takac (vocals & bass), and George Tutuska (drums) with the former name Sex Maggots.
Searching gigs the band was booked by the owner of a club that required the band to change their name to make it possible for advertising in local newspapers. The band accepted the name Goo Goo Dolls after a toy's advertisement seen in a newspaper.
Although Goo Goo Dolls signed in 1986 to Mercenary Records for the releasing of their self-titled debut album the company was picked up by the New Yorkian Celluloid Records. Later that year the band’s debut album was re-released by Metal Blade Records with the revised title of "First Release". These changes only involved the name of the album and the featured cover artwork, however.
Seeking new horizons, the trio moved to Los Angeles, in 1989 and began to work on a second album, "Jed", released in 1989 and followed by "Hold Me Up" (1990) and "Superstar Car Wash" (1993). After touring all over the country, the Goo Goo Dolls released a new album that went Double Platinum in 1995, "A Boy Named Goo", and peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Chart.
Attracting positive critics, the Goo Goo Dolls were pushed intro the mainstream through a college radio station. Eventually, a video including the band’s song was shown on a MTV program. At this point of their career, John Rzeznik questioned George Tutuska' commitment with the band asking him to leave, then drummer Mike Malinin took his place.
Success of "A Boy Named Goo" put the band into their recording label's parent company, Warner Bros. Records which released the band's 1998 Triple Platinum "Dizzy Up the Girl", "Gutterflower" (2002), and Goo Goo Dolls’ most recent album "Love In", number 9 on the charts as of 2006.
