Nine Inch Nails was formed In Cleveland, Ohio in 1998 by Trent Reznor. He is the only original member and he is the producer, songwriter, and is solely responsible for the musical direction he wants the band to go. He will hire a band to tour along that are quite different in their performance than Nine Inch Nails and in the recording studio as well. When they perform on stage, it usually ends up with many instruments being smashed. In the 1990's, they released several songs that took them to international success and two Grammy's. So far, they have sold albums worth 10.5 million.
When they first started out, Reznor was a janitor and programmer for Right Track Studios in Cleveland. He asked if he could make some demos at night when the studio was not being used. The owner, Bart Koster, agreed saying it only cost him a little wear on his tape heads. He could not find anyone who could play his songs how he wanted so he ended up playing all the instruments himself. Their first album released in 1994 was called "Pretty Hate Machine". It went platinum after being on the charts for two years. They went on to release, "Broken" in 1992, which had an aggressive live sound.
Nine Inch nails second full album, "The Downward Spiral" was released in 1994 and debuted on Billboard 200 at number 2. This eventually became their highest selling album in the United States. Then they released a remix titled, "Further Down the Spiral", which was the only non-major release to be certified gold in the United States.
Fans had a five year wait until they released their next albumin 1999, "The Fragile" which was a double CD. This album sold 228,000 copies in one week. Their fourth album, "With Teeth" released in 2005 and then their "Year Zero" album released in 2007. The band made the entire album available for streaming online in April 2007. They have won 10 different awards over the years for their music and videos.
